William Mains will contest this year’s Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship in his very rapid 1400S class Vauxhall Nova.
The Llandysul driver only started rallying six years ago, but last year he became the 1400 class King of Epynt champion and overall champion in the FMP Rally Challenge (the Maesteg & District Motor Club promoted series which is open to members of all MSA registered motor clubs and supports the Wales Air Ambulance).
“I started rallying six years ago, where we entered a novice rally seeded at 37 and was lucky enough to come home second overall,” says William. “I then stepped in to help Cadog Davies in the semi-expert class; he was leading the Welsh Championship and his lady driver fell pregnant, and we managed to win the last rounds which saw him clinch the class championship title. We carried on the following season in the Welsh semi-experts and after a very poor start, breaking a driveshaft on the first round, we won the next ten rounds to secure the title.
“We did a few stage events in the road rally class before buying the Nova for the 1400cc class, coming second in class on our first event in the car. Last year we had a big push and entered a fair few events, winning the Welsh 1400 class, the King of Epynt 1400 class and becoming overall champion in the FMP Rally Challenge. We also did our first overseas event, coming second in class in Wexford.
“Our plan for this year is much of the same, with more overseas trips hopefully. The white car is a spare until the engine is ready from a Hereford engine builder, which is taking a bit longer than expected but has been a gem and I’m starting to like it better! With a cracking entry for the Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, it looks like 2018 will be a very good challenge again.”
William, who runs a very busy building maintenance and cleaning firm, will be co-driven by a variety of navigators, including Aled and Sarah Edwards, Vince Mosely, Sion Jones and Arfon Grifiths. He is supported by Roy Thomas and Sons (PVC windows and doors), Emyr Jones Engineering, Ffostrasol Garage, West Wales Rally Spares and I P B Motors Ltd.
