Chris Wheeler will join the Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship from Round 2, the Bet On Aces Manx National Rally (May 11-12), onwards in his Citroen DS3 R3T. The event will mark the 23-year old driver’s first time back on the Isle of Man since 2014 and his first major rally since a big accident ended his 2016 season.
Wheeler will be co-driven by 21-year old Shaun Layland, and, having done a small rally together earlier this year (which went well with a third in class result), the young Devon crew will use the Manx National to gain further experience and develop their in-car relationship.
The Isle of Man has had its ups and downs in previous years for the Chris Wheeler Rallying team, but hopefully it will mark turning point in the squad’s fortunes. The Manx National is certainly an event Wheeler wants to come back and conquer and “all fingers are crossed!”
“I am very excited to return to the Isle of Man and also get back behind the wheel of my DS3 at a national event,” said Wheeler. “The Asphalt Rally Championship has a great calendar and has come back stronger after a year’s sabbatical, so I’m look forward to being a part of it all and I am ready once again to compete on these type of big events. I’m feeling confident with the car and with Shaun as my new co-driver; this season should be a good one for the pair of us to gain seat time and progress together.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the whole team and family for all their hard work to get us back out on the stages. Here’s to a new start and a comeback to bigger and better things!”
