Paul and Julian Doroszczuk are looking forward to the next round of the Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Carryduff Folklift Down Rally on 21 July, after retiring from the Rally van Wervik whilst leading their class in their rapid normally aspirated Cosworth-engined Escort Mk2.
“Our first ever rally in Belgium will be remembered with mixed emotions and memories,” said Doroszczuk. “The stages, although short, were very fast yet technically demanding with the inevitable cuts to corners proving an absolute necessity if you were to be on the pace. The spectators and people were warm, friendly and fanatical about their rallying. The hotel and food were excellent, made only bettered by the glorious weather. The company of fellow competitor Phil Turner and his team ensured we all enjoyed the craic.
“From a hesitant start, due to wrong tyres leading to little or no predictable grip, we changed to harder tyres after stage three and transformed the handling of the car. With new found confidence, the stage times got faster and faster resulting in us taking a clear lead in our class in the Championship. However, the end of stage six saw the clutch fail and despite the best efforts of Craig and Alan in service we drove stages seven and eight without the clutch before terminal failure on the start line of stage nine whilst still leading our class.
“Look out Ireland, here we come.”
