This year’s Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally will celebrate its 40th anniversary, after it was first held as a night-time event over the Epynt military ranges in 1978.
Organised by Epynt MC, this year’s event takes place on Sunday 26 August and is the fifth and penultimate round of the 2018 Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. The event will contain 75 fantastic asphalt stage miles over 13 special stages. Scrutineering and documentation will take place the day before, with competitor signing-on at the Royal Welsh Showground’s International Pavilion (Rally HQ). There will also be the option of scrutineering and sign-on on the Sunday morning.
Damian Cole will be looking to equal John Price’s record of six wins on the event, having won three of a last four Mewla Rallies – with his first win coming exactly 10 years ago. There are some other great names on the winners’ trophy – including Bob Fowden, who scored his first of three wins back in 1982, and three time winner Eian Pritchard, father of 2018 title-challenger Jason Pritchard. Melvyn Evans, who led the Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship after round one, won the event in 2003. The first winners of the event 40 years ago were Frank Pierson/Ednyfed Morgan in an RS1800.
