For several years, two of Tyneside’s premier motor clubs, Hadrian Motor Sports Club and Whickham and District Motor Club, have collaborated in co-promoting the Cheviot Stages Rally on the roads of the infamous military ranges at Otterburn. Included in the entry fee for the event is a fee that allows competitors to take part, on the Saturday afternoon, in two laps reconnaissance of the route. This fee has then been donated to a nominated charity.
The nominated charity for the 2018 Ford Parts Cheviot Stages was Maggie’s Centre, Newcastle. This year, Joan Cross, one of the volunteers from the centre was able to attend the competitor signing on at Rochester Village Hall with a couple of collecting buckets to boost the total. The charity was set up the help people who are affected by the diagnosis of cancer, not just the patient but families and loved ones.
The Centre is based at the Freeman Hospital site of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and provides an oasis of calm and support, where people affected by cancer can go in, sit and chat to other people affected by cancer over a cup of tea or coffee and a snack. There are also rooms where counselling activities can take place as well as regular support group meetings that provide help for those affected by the diagnosis of all forms of cancer.
Earlier this month, representatives from Hadrian Motor Sports Club and Whickham and District Motor Club attended a presentation evening at Maggie’s Centre and presented a cheque for £1,000 to Joan Cross and Marissa Magee, the Fundraising Manager, from Maggie’s Centre, Newcastle.
