Darren Atkinson’s return to the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship proved a very successful one, as he won the B13 class on both the Friday and Saturday legs to jump straight into the lead of the category.
The Lancaster-based driver is back in his Atkinsons Sandblasting/Dennison Trailers/S&W Fabrication-backed Escort Mk2, after a major rebuild following a big accident in it three years ago.
Despite catching the car ahead of him on the Masterpixel Media Manx National Rally, Atkinson finished the opening Friday leg in a magnificent 10th overall. Together with Phil Sandham on the pace notes, he then moved up to eighth overall after an equally impressive run on Saturday.
After such a strong points-scoring performance, Atkinson now leads the B13 class and is eighth in the overall drivers’ standings.
