Brothers Paul and Julian Doroszczuk are aiming to reclaim the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship class B11 title they won in 2018, when they return to the UK’s premier sealed-surface series in their Drockspeed Motorsport Escort Mk2.
Covid-19 restrictions have prevented them from competing since the Jim Clark Rally in November 2019 – so they are like a pair of coiled springs eagerly awaiting the opening round of the 2021 series, the Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally on Sunday 29 August.
And Epynt is a place where they have excelled before; their rapid normally-aspirated Cosworth engined Ford, which produces an impressive 301bhp at a rev-limited 9000rpm, well suited to the fast and undulating roads.
However, they will have to score well on all the rounds that they can contest – as a very important event will prevent them from taking part in the PokerStars Rally.
“Despite the cancellation of some great events like the Jim Clark and Manx National, Jane [Evans, Protyre MSUK Asphalt Rally Championship Co-ordinator] and the team have managed, under real adversity, to pull together a championship worthy of its name and history,” says co-driver Julian.
“It’s great to see the return of one of our favourite events, the Mewla, and the excitement of breaking into new territory with the Three Shires and Tyrone rallies.
“The only real downside to the amended championship is the inclusion of the PokerStars Rally.
“Paul and I love the Manx stages and have always gone well on the island, but Jane, fancy putting an event in the calendar that is on the same date as my daughter’s wedding! Having already postponed the wedding once, as it was originally planned for last October, I do not think I would ever be forgiven if I was not there to walk her down the aisle.
“Hopefully with four good results we will still be in contention for some silverware to add to the growing collection at the end of the year.”
