Torquay-based rally driver Chris Wheeler says he is ready to return to the big time and compete in his first major national championship for three years, after a phenomenally successful 2019 season that saw him finish every rally he entered.
In 2020, Wheeler and co-driver Shaun Layland will contest a full season in the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship, driving their faithful 1.6-litre turbocharged Citroen DS3 R3T.
Wheeler won the hotly contested BRC3 class in the 2016 British Rally Championship and is now fully recovered from an accident during that season that required his Citroen to undergo a full ground-up rebuild.
He has spent the last two seasons building seat time and regaining his speed by concentrating on a campaign of regional rallies, to make sure both the car and team are ready for the step up.
“It’s really boosted our confidence to finish every rally we entered last year,” said Chris. “We also picked up several top ten results against good opposition. Now we are sure the time is right to take on a major national series again.
“We looked carefully at the various championship options and feel the Protyre National Asphalt Championship gives the right balance of high quality competition and value for money.”
