Kirkaldy begins 2020 with a win

Alan Kirkaldy has begun the 2020 rally season with a win, taking his Cairnsmill Caravan Park-backed Ford Fiesta R5 to a pre-Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship victory on the Grant Construction Knockhill Stages Rally.

In dry and very cold conditions, the St Andrews driver took the lead on stage two and never looked back, eventually finishing over two minutes ahead of second-placed Donnie MacDonald/Andrew Falconer in a Mitsubishi Evo 9.

Kirkaldy – who sensationally won the final round of last year’s Asphalt Rally Championship, the Ford Parts Cheviot Stages Rally, outright – was co-driven at Knockhill by Chris Lee, who was delighted to record his first overall rally win.

Of course rallying is a team effort, and helping Kirkaldy on the spanners at the Fife racing circuit was none other than Jonathan Stepney, who will himself contest this year’s Asphalt Rally Championship driving his 1.9-litre engined Peugeot 205 GTi.
