The Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally prepares for surge of entries

The opening round of the 2021 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship, The Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally, is preparing itself for a surge of entries – with Regulations going live at 18.00 on Thursday 1 July and Entries opening at 18.00 on Monday 5 July.

This year’s eagerly awaited event takes place on Sunday 29 August, where the organisers hope to receive a full entry of 120 crews.

The Mewla Rally was first run 43 years ago, with the inaugural 1978 event won by Frank Pierson/Ed Morgan in a Ford Escort RS1800 Mk2. This will be the 40th running of the event.

Damian Cole/Paul Spooner won the last Mewla Rally in 2019 in their Get Connected Rally Team Ford Fiesta WRC in 2019. That victory for Damian’s sixth on the Mewla Rally and his 23rd rally win on Epynt – equalling the records set by the late and great John Price almost 20 years ago.

This year’s Mewla Rally will be the seventh year of title sponsorship from Brian and Tim Dennis of The Old Forge Garage.

The event will also welcome on board Rally Marketing as an associate sponsor. Howard Watkins has continued to support the Mewla Rally for many years, and was title sponsor in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

This year’s Mewla Rally route is expected to include over 65 stage miles, spread over nine challenging stages, with service re-located back to Mabion Way.

There will be no recce this year, but each competitor will be supplied with a digital video of the route courtesy of OnThePaceNotes.

In-line with most other events this year, the Mewla Rally will run with contactless timing, and with near-live results through, straight from every finish line.

Owing to military training exercises, the MOD, which owns the land, has requested that this year’s event will not be open to spectators. Competitors are asked to help spread this message.
