This Sunday’s Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally will be Geoff Glover’s 106th Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship start in his rear-wheel drive Vauxhall Astra, as the North Yorkshireman begins his 22nd season contesting the UK’s premier sealed-surface series.
Geoff began road rallying an Opel Ascona in 1982 – and thanks to Covid-19, 2020 was the first year that he hadn’t been able to do a rally. Even during the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001, he managed to compete in three rounds of the Asphalt Championship.
He has spent lockdown preparing his self-funded Astra RWD, which always looks showroom fresh on every event.
Rear Wheel Drive Challenge champion in 2016, Geoff now competes in the highly-competitive B11 class. Despite being up against the likes of Paul Doroszczuk, Phil Turner and John Devlin in more powerful Escort Mk2s, Geoff finished runner-up in class in both 2018 and ’19.
Geoff has had to admit to the passing of time in one important area. He has finally had to have the car re-examined by Motorsport UK and obtain a Vehicle Passport rather than the original MSA Log Book that he has used since it was issued in 1997.
That will no-doubt please Protyre Asphalt eligibility scrutineer Geoff Doe, who has often had to come to Geoff’s rescue and confirm to event scrutineers that the car is not a new build!
Geoff will continue to be co-driven by Keith Barker from London.
