Steve Wood wins class on Circuit of Kerry

Reigning Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally champion Steve Wood won class 7 and narrowly missed out on a top 10 finish in what he described as a “thoroughly enjoyable weekend and a great rally” when he took his Trailhead Get Jerky-backed Ford Fiesta RS WRC over to the Circuit of Kerry.

Co-driven by Kenny Hull, the Aberystwyth driver was 20th overall after the opening stage and climbed to 11th after the ninth and final test – just 12.8 seconds off tenth place.

It had been 13 years since John Stone last contested the Circuit of Kerry, having contested the event in 2010 in a Škoda Fabia WRC. This time he was driving his Legend Fires Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 and, together with Dafydd Evans on the notes, climbed from 31st after SS1 to finish 27th at the end of the event, missing out on a top 25 result by just 5.5 seconds.

Hugh Hunter/Rob Fagg were out in their very smart new Ford Fiesta Rally2 and were 25th overall when they ran wide and into a ditch on SS6.

Patrick Walsh was co-driving for Declan Boyle, but their Citroën C3 Rally2 cracked the exhaust manifold which left them with no power on SS2. With the Circuit of Ireland coming up on Easter weekend, they retired the car to avoid inflicting further damage.
