Andy Scott was surprised when his co-driver Ian Robertson put in their entry for this year’s Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship – as the class B13 frontrunners will be swapping seats for 2024, with Andy handling the pace notes and Ian taking control of the steering wheel.
And after a magnificent 2023 season in which Andy finished runner-up in class B13 driving his Connaught Warrior-powered P.A.C.E. Escort Mk2 and Ian winning the co-driver’s title, what could possibly go wrong in 2024 – particularly as Ian has a choice of two cars for this year, neither one of which he has driven yet!
“When I did the entry for this year’s Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship, Paul messaged me to ask if I was sure that I had clicked the correct boxes – as I had myself down as driver and Andy down as the co-driver,” admits Ian.
“I explained to Andy that as the championship was so much fun, we have decided to do it in my Escort, which I have never yet driven, or possibly my other white car which is a Historic spec Hillman Avenger – it if is ready in time, and again a car which I have never driven!
“I am not sure if anyone has done two years of the Protyre Asphalt Championship and swaps seats before.
“And before anyone asks, yes I have to write R and L on the back of my hands, no matter what seat I am in!”
