John aims to uphold Forrest family rally honours on Protyre Asphalt debut

Not to be outdone by his wife’s title-winning driving exploits, former co-driver John Forrest has taken the plunge and will contest the 2024 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship behind the wheel of his Alan Causey Motorsport-prepared and Literal Ink-backed Ford Fiesta Rally2.

John’s wife Aileen had been coming to watch him navigate on events ever since he started competing in 2014, most notably for John Wink in the Scottish Rally Championship in the first Hyundai i20 R5 to come into the UK.

In 2018 Aileen started rallying herself. Success didn’t take long, and in 2022 she became Scottish Ladies’ champion driving a Mitsubishi Evo – with John co-driving.

And in 2023, John swapped over into the driver’s seat himself, with immediate success.

“In 2023, I decided that it was time that I had a go at driving. I did my first event which was the Jim Clark and loved every minute, so at the end of the year I bought myself a Fiesta Rally2,” says John.

“I did small events at Crail and Kinloss to try to learn how to drive the thing, but both times it was so wet that we never got the chance to have a proper go.

“I have signed up for the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship for this year. I did the East Riding Stages as a warm up, which went pretty well. I’ve just got a run confirmed on the opening round and I have the ferry and hotel booked for the Manx.”

Co-driven by Ashleigh Will, John will make his Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship debut on next weekend’s Legend Fires North West Stages (22/23 March).
