Callum Black says that his results on the next two rounds of the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship are crucial in his quest to retain his overall drivers’ title – and the maths support what the 586 Sport driver says.
Callum currently sits 10th in the drivers’ standings on 49 points, after picking up a 10th-placed points finish on the opening round (after what turned into a time-consuming biff to a rear wheel), a fightback to second on Round 2 and an unlucky mechanical retirement on Round 3.
Last year on the Beatson’s Building Supplies Jim Clark Rally and Dunoon Presents Argyll Rally – the two rallies which are coming up next – Callum scored a total of 56 points.
And that’s pretty much what Callum and co-driver Jack Morton need to score again in their Pallas Connections Ford Fiesta Rally2 if they have any chance of winning back-to-back titles. Especially as James Williams has scored three out of three Protyre Asphalt wins in his Orange Amplifiers Hyundai i20 N Rally2 and leads the series on 90 points.
“We really need to crack on now, and the next two rounds in Scotland are crucial,” admits Callum.
“We had a good run in Argyll last year. We really enjoyed it and managed to get the win – so if we can do that again, and pick up maximum points on the Jim Clark, then suddenly we’ll be right back in the fight.
“We really need to get two very strong results out of the next two events because if James [Williams] gets two more wins then it will be looking very good for him for the rest of the season.”
The Jim Clark Rally starts on Friday (24 May) at 18:00 – with live and free-to-view coverage over the two-day event on Special Stage TV.
