Paul Wakely becomes Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship Co-ordinator

Paul Wakely is the new Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship Co-ordinator, bringing with him an unprecedented amount of rallying experience both as a competitor and series planner.

Paul has been involved in rallying for over 40 years. Having competed in over 300 events, the 57-year old Penrhiwllan-based co-ordinator has a long list of navigating achievements which include two victories on the Mewla Rally – in 2005 with Melvyn Evans (Subaru Impreza S7 WRC) and in 2017 with Bob Fowden (Subaru Impreza S11 WRC). He has also been heavily involved in running the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship for the last three years, assisting the outgoing co-ordinator Paul Morris and Donna Preston.

Paul becomes just the fifth co-ordinator in the 40-year history of the UK’s premier sealed-surface series and follows in the footsteps of Nigel Evans (1984-1995), Andrew Haill (1996-2016), Jane Evans (2018-2021) and Paul Morris (2022-2024).

Following one of the most successful years in the recent history of the series, with 200 registered competitors in 2024, all the Protyre Asphalt Championship backroom staff have been retained, including results/points guru Ron Jackson, photographers Mark Sims and Russ Otway, scrutineer Geoff Doe, press officer Paul Evans and the live streaming team at Special Stage TV.

“It’s an honour to take over as co-ordinator of the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship,” said Paul Wakely.

“Having assisted Paul Morris over the last three years, attending championship events and meeting the event organisers and competitors, the aim is very much to continue to guide the championship along the same highly competitive and super friendly path. With support from the BTRDA, stability in terms of an experience backroom staff and a great calendar of events, I am confident that we will be able to continue to grow the championship from strength to strength.”

“We are absolutely delighted to announce Paul Wakely as the new Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship Co-ordinator,” said Mike Broad, President of the BTRDA.

“We had some extremely good candidates come forward and a very positive interview process. In the end it was Paul’s recent experience in the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship that guarantees a seamless transition and makes him the best placed to take over the co-ordination of the championship. We are confident that Paul will be a tremendous asset to the Protyre Asphalt Rally Championship, and I look forward to working with him to develop the series to even greater heights.”
