Niall McGonigle has scored maximum Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship points after a stunning drive to second overall on the Manx National Rally.
Co-driven by Caolan McKenna, the Strabane driver held onto the top Protyre spot in his Bear Competitions/CM Trust Volkswagen Polo GTI R5, despite a magnificent fightback from Jason Pritchard.
A cautious start saw Jason down in ninth place overall after the opening stage, but together with co-driver Phil Clarke the three-time Protyre Asphalt champion took day two by storm to finish third overall and claim second place points in his Pirelli-shod North Road Garage/Guttercrest Toyota GR Yaris Rally2.
David Wright/Jane Nicol were in second at the overnight halt but couldn’t keep Jason behind them. A Protyre Asphalt podium in their GPM/DamperTek/Grove Hill Garage Fiesta Rally2 is still a fantastic result and strengthens their title challenge.
Rob Fagg picks up maximum Protyre Asphalt co-drivers’ points, having navigated the unregistered Ryan Loughran to overall victory in their Škoda Fabia Rally2 – despite hitting a pheasant and damaging the radiator three stages from home.
Lee Edwards/Sam Spencer are the top 2WD finishers, after another stupendous performance in their spectacular Blakemore’s Autos/Evans Construction/P&B Tyres/Bailey Performance Escort G3.
