John Devlin has made a late entry to this Sunday’s Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally, spicing up an already close and exciting class B11 battle.
The Banbridge driver has scored maximum class points on all three Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship rounds that he has contested so far this year (the double-header Masterpixel Media Manx National Rally and Carryduff Forklift Down Rally) and leads class B11 by 14 points.
Devlin was also the top placed two-wheel drive registered contender home in Northern Ireland finishing third, and won the Mintex Award for the best improvement on seeding (starting 38 and finishing 13th overall). That result saw him rocket up to ninth in the overall Asphalt Championship drivers’ points table.
Devlin doesn’t know Epynt as well as his rivals, but together with co-driver John McCarthy, he’ll nonetheless be aiming for another class win in his Ford Escort Mk2.
Geoff Glover/Keith Barker head to Epynt this weekend lying second in the B11 class with their rapid rear-wheel drive Astra, while triple Welsh Tarmacadam champion Richard Merriman, who won the B11 class on the Rallynuts National Tour of Epynt, returns with co-driver Kath Curzon in his The Roof Hub/Touchline-backed Darrian T90. Paul and Julian Doroszczuk also return for the first time since engine problems in their Drockspeed Motorsport Escort Mk2 brought their title defence to a halt on the Manx. Phil Turner was hoping for a better season as well, but together with Terry Martin the Toovey Race Engines/ST Motorsport-backed Escort Mk2 driver will be super quick over the Epynt ranges. Graham Hollis also returns to the series, having finished second in class on the Tour of Epynt. He’ll be co-driven by class leading co-driver Ashley Trimble.
