Sam Touzel on song as fast and furious Tour of Epynt battle begins

Sam Touzel heads the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship at the Ynyscynon MOT Centre Tour of Epynt overnight halt, after a fast and furious four stages in his Michelin-shod Smart Scaffolding/Trade Centre UK Ford Fiesta Rally2.

Co-driven by Max Freeman, the newly crowned champion had a trouble-free start to only his second appearance on the rollercoaster Mynydd Epynt military range roads, completing leg one’s 23.84 stage miles just one second off the overall lead and 10 seconds ahead of David Wright/Jane Nicol, who have also started well in their GPM/DamperTek/Grove Hill Garage Fiesta Rally2.

Damian Cole/Paul Spooner are third Protyre Asphalt crew overnight in their Get Connected Citroën C3 Rally2, seven seconds ahead of John Stone/Rhys Stoneman, who have been nursing an engine issue in their Legend Performance Engineering Volkswagen Polo GTI R5.

Huw James/Lewis Sim are the top-placed Protyre Asphalt 2WD crew and are an impressive ninth overall in their A&D Tyres Escort Mk2, despite starting on too softer suspension and having the car move around a lot on the opening two stages.

It wasn’t such a good start for Brad Cole/Jamie Vaughan, with mechanical issues (possibly steering or suspension related) keeping them outside the top 10 in their Hydroline Solutions Fiesta Rally2.

Andrew O’Hanlon’s Mini Cooper S was awarded the Dynamic Fluids Best Presented Car Award, selected and presented by Protyre Asphalt Championship scrutineer Geoff Doe. Co-driven by Kevin Hogan, Andrew started well and is on course to claim the BTRDA Historic Asphalt Cup title.

The Port Talbot Motor Club-organised event continues on Sunday (28 September) with a further four stages, all over 13 miles long.
